University of Oregon Muggle Quidditch League (January 2010 - October 2011)

This is how they treated their commissioner!
This was my pet project. Given the assignment of restructuring a community organization from my public policy professor, I tackled the defunct campus Muggle Quidditch group. I started planning in November 2009, launched in January 2010, and continued playing every weekend (rain or shine) until fall 2011. Although my class project had grown into an activity that students looked forward to, a class of ambitious freshmen had finally arrived, ready to lead the group.

As leader of the league, I acted as the main contact for the press, community members, and students, managing social media channels and communication with a 251-person Facebook group. I organized scrimmages, transported equipment (those goalposts - set in buckets of concrete - are heavier than you think), split people up into teams, refereed, and held the first ever Muggle Quidditch tournament on campus. While I had never been involved in recreational sports, my natural enthusiasm for an idea is infectious, and the league easily grew through word of mouth.

Far from being a traditional athletic group, Quidditch is something you just have to experience, and I’m happy that I’ve brought it to our campus. The group taught me a lot about pursuing a passion and starting something from the ground up.
